By a MetNews Staff Writer

Los Angeles Superior Court Referee Mildred Escobedo’s lead in her close contest with Deputy District Attorney Patrick David Campbell for an open Superior Court judgeship widened slightly as the counting of absentee and provisional ballots continued yesterday.

The registrar-recorder reported that Escobedo had added 37,362 votes to her previous total and now has 1,070,386. Campbell added 36,186 for a total of 1,053,617, giving Escobedo a lead of 16,679, or 0.78 percent of the vote cast.

A spokesperson for the registrar-recorder said there are approximately 10,000 to 15,000 absentee ballots and over 180,000 provisional ballots still to be counted.

The winner of the Escobedo-Campbell contest will succeed Judge Marcus O. Tucker, who did not seek re-election.
