Gov. Gray Davis yesterday named Yolo Superior Court Executive Officer Kathleen M. White, a former Los Angeles and Pasadena lawyer, as a judge of the Yolo Superior Court.

White, 49, joined the now-defunct Los Angeles firm of Kadison, Pfaelzer, Woodard, Quinn & Rossi in 1987, following graduation from USC Law School, then joined the local office of White & Case. Her practice at the time focused on complex commercial and business litigation, bankruptcy reorganizations, insolvency and work-outs.

In 1991, she formed her own firm in Pasadena, specializing in business bankruptcy. She left that firm in 1993 to become a sole practitioner, first in Pasadena and then in Davis, where she and her family moved in 1994.

She joined the Yolo Superior Court as a research attorney in 1997 and subsequently served in the positions of senior staff attorney and general counsel before being named the court’s top administrator in September 1999.

In addition to overseeing the court’s $8.5 million budget and a 108-person staff, White has served as a judge pro tempore on an as-needed basis, presiding over the Drug Court, handling criminal arraignments and sentences, and hearing small claims, unlawful detainer, traffic, juvenile and family law matters.

White, whose undergraduate degree is from Duke University, fills a new position on the court.
