High Court to Honor Eagleson in Opening Local Session

The California Supreme Court will open its Los Angeles oral argument calendar next month with a memorial session honoring the late Justice David N. Eagleson, the Administrative Office of the Courts announced yesterday.
The session will take place at 9 a.m. on Oct. 8 in the Supreme Court Courtroom at the Ronald Reagan State Office Building. Speakers are to include former Chief Justice Malcolm M. Lucas; Rick Seitz, a former staff attorney for Eagleson; and the late juristís daughter, attorney Beth Eagleson.
Eagleson, who served on the Supreme Court from 1987 to 1991, died May 23 after a brief illness. His judicial career spanned more than 20 years on the trial and appellate benches.
He was appointed to the stateís highest court by then-Gov. George Deukmejian, along with Marcus Kaufman and John Arguelles, after the late Chief Justice Rose Bird and Justices Joseph Grodin and Cruz Reynoso were voted out of office in 1986.
Then-Gov. Ronald Reagan appointed him to the Superior Court in 1970. He served as assistant presiding judge of the court in 1979 and 1980, and as presiding judge for two years after that, and served simultaneously as president of the California Judges Association for one year while assistant presiding judge.
The AOC announcement said that, in keeping with the court’s tradition, the proceedings will be published in the court’s official reports.
The court is to hear oral arguments in Los Angeles on Oct. 8 and 9.
