The Los Angeles Superior Court has welcomed its newest judge.

Judge Lisa M. Chung, 37, took the oath Thursday afternoon. Judge Thomas White did the honors in Lancaster, where Chung has been a deputy district attorney since 1995.

Chung, who joined the District Attorney’s Office in 1992, was named to the court by Gov. Gray Davis 10 days ago and took “just a couple of days to wrap things up” before being sworn in, she explained Friday. She will undergo training this week and the beginning of next and will move into her Lancaster courtroom April 10.

Her precise assignment has not yet been determined, but she is pleased to be remaining in Lancaster, she said, because she knows the judges there and “we work well together.”

She has prosecuted a wide range of felony and misdemeanor cases, including homicides, and headed the Domestic Violence Unit in Lancaster from 1999 until she took the bench.

She also coordinated the Victim Impact Program, overseeing prosecutions of crimes committed against the elderly and children, hate crimes, crimes of sexual abuse, stalking and domestic violence. One of her high-profile cases was the prosecution of Lancaster mayoral candidate David Abber, sentenced to 210 days in jail as a condition of felony probation for stalking his girlfriend.
