CalPERS Board Names Peter Mixon To Be Its General Counsel

By a MetNews Staff Writer

Longtime California Public Retirement System attorney Peter H. Mixon has been named general counsel of the $128 billion pension fund, the CalPERS board reported yesterday.

Mixon will succeed Kayla Gillan, who stepped down from the top post in August.

As general counsel, Mixon will oversee a legal staff of 13 plus the work of outside counsel. He will advise the CalPERS Board of Administration, board committees, senior management and executive staff.

The job requires expertise in pension and trust law, tax law, health care, investments and corporate governance.

The sheer size of the nation’s largest public pension fund conveys unusual clout. CalPERS has a corporate governance program that encourages companies in which the fund owns stock to adopt policies to increase profitabilityó-and consequently shareholder value.

As general counsel Mixon will coordinate the program.

Before coming to CalPERS in 1996, Mixon worked in private practice for 10 years.

He graduated from U.C. Berkeley and earned his law degree from the University of the Pacific’s McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento.
