Markell Named Of Counsel to Bankruptcy Firm Stutman, Treister & Glatt

By a MetNews Staff Writer

Distinguished educator and veteran bankruptcy attorney Bruce Markell has become of counsel to Stutman, Treister & Glatt, the Los Angeles bankruptcy boutique firm located in the mid-Wilshire area.

Markell will concurrently continue to be the Doris S. and Theodore B. Lee Professor of Law at the William S. Boyd School of Law, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, a post he filled in December, 2000.

Markell said his work for the firm will be done from Las Vegas and will take no more than 20 percent of his time—an allotment capped by university policy.

While he has spoken at numerous continuing education events for attorneys, Markell said that is “not the same as talking with and helping lawyers deal with problems.

“When you teach in the area of bankruptcy and commercial law, you need to know what the issues are,” Markell said.  “The only real way to keep abreast is to be with those people doing the work.”

Stutman, Treister & Glatt partner Robert Greenfield said Markell will principally advise the firm on issues relating to expert testimony.

“Bruce Markell has forged an enviable record of successes at leading universities around the nation and at any number of outstanding law firms, so we are extremely pleased to have a professional of his esteem and reputation associated with us,” Greenfield said.

A one-time partner at the Los Angeles firm Sidley & Austin, Markell left the firm and Los Angeles in 1990 and became a professor of law at Indiana University and later was a visiting professor at Harvard Law School in 1999.

He then moved on to his current post at the law school of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Markell is a member of the American Law Institute, a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy, a member of the International Insolvency Institute and a conferee of the National Bankruptcy Conference.

Markell also serves on the Board of Editors for “Collier on Bankruptcy.”
