Lyon & Lyon Breakup Complete as Founders Go to Holland & Knight

By a MetNews Staff Writer

The direct descendants of the founding partners of the recently dissolved Los Angeles firm of Lyon & Lyon have joined the West Coast office of Holland & Knight.

Robert E. Lyon joined Holland as Of Counsel and Richard E. Lyon as a partner yesterday. The announcement follows the Lyon firm’s Aug. 8 announcement that it was shutting down after a failed attempt to merge with Townsend and Townsend and Crew.

The hires are part of Holland’s drive to build its intellectual property practice on the West Coast, Mark Shipow, Holland executive partner, said.

Because Lyon & Lyon specialized in intellectual property law, the Lyons will be a “great asset,” Shipow said.

So will the clients they’re bringing along, who include “virtually all” of their clients from Lyon & Lyon, Richard Lyon said. Included are some big names like Edison International.

“We already have some intellectual property practice, but we’re certainly looking to expand that on the west coast,” Shipow said. “We’re continually looking to expand our west coast practice.”

Richard Lyon said he was considering several firms, but was interested in Holland from the start. “I got very interested in Holland & Knight early on, and so my efforts were concentrated there,” he said. “I’m looking forward to a very long and fruitful career here.”

Since the dissolution of the Lyon firm law firms interested in acquiring intellectual property specialists have been courting former partners and associates from the firm. Former partner James Brooks joined the Los Angeles offices of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe earlier this week.
