By a MetNews Staff Writer

Assistant U.S. Attorney Theresa J. Canepa of the Northern District of California was named by Gov. Gray Davis yesterday to the Contra Costa Superior Court.

Canepa, 46, has been chief of the U.S. attorney’s Organized Crime Strike Force since 1999. She was previously deputy chief of the Narcotics Section, where she prosecuted Pius Aileman, sentenced to 25 years in prison for heroin and cocaine trafficking.

Her work on the case against Aileman, identified as the head of a major drug ring, won her a major award from the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Canepa became a federal prosecutor in 1990, after seven years as an Alameda deputy district attorney. She is a graduate of UC Davis and Santa Clara University Law School.
