Attorney Joseph Gorman to Get Arthur K. Marshall Award

The Trusts and Estates Law Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association will present its Arthur K. Marshall Award to Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton partner Joseph Gorman June 25.
The Marshall award, named for the late Los Angeles Superior Court judge, was established in 1982 when Gorman was chair of the Trusts and Estates Section. Marshall, who died in 1999, was the first recipient.
“I’m honored to receive this award,” Gorman said. “I knew Art Marshall as a respected colleague both on and off the bench.”
A partner in Sheppard Mullin’s Tax and Estate Planning practice group in the firm’s Los Angeles office, Gorman focuses his practice on estate planning and the administration of trusts and estates.
His experience includes the creation and administration of charitable trusts and foundations, life insurance irrevocable trusts, family limited partnerships and limited liability corporations. He has also litigated many high profile matters involving trusts and estates.
Gorman has served as chair of the Death Tax Committees of the California State Bar’s and LACBA’s Tax Sections. He is a fellow of the American College of Trusts & Estates Counsel and served for six years as a college regent.
A Los Angeles Superior Court judge for more than 25 years, Marshall was renowned for his wisdom on probate matters.
Marshall was appointed to the Los Angeles Municipal Court judge by Governor Edmund G. Brown in January 1962 and was elevated to the superior court a year later and eventually served as supervising judge of the Probate Department.
Marshall also served as acting assistant professor of Property and Trust Law at UCLA for six years and was a frequent lecturer on Taxation and Probate procedures at USC Law Center.
He authored the California Probate Handbook and California State and Local Taxation.
